Gossip Girl: Does The Show Go Too Far?

Taylor Momsen is Jenny on Gossip GirlGossip Girl has been getting a lot of attention, and not all of it is positive. For one thing, plenty of critics question whether the show goes too far in depicting drinking and sex among its teenage cast.

Personally, we don’t think it’s that big a deal – the show is a soapy drama, and we doubt anyone ever worried that maybe all the catfights Alexis and Crystal engaged in on Dynasty were sending the wrong message to shoulder-pad-clad matriarchs. We kind of think teens are smarter than a lot of critics give them credit for.

And executive producer Josh Schwartz (late of The O.C., another soapy drama that showed teens behaving badly) says that the show isn’t exactly saying that drunken debauchery is a good thing: “We’re not presenting this as a perfect world,” he said. “These are flawed characters…The world isn’t nearly as depraved as it appears to be.”

“As long as we continue to portray this world responsibly but realistically, we think the show should have a teen-aged audience,” he continued.

The other big topic of debate? Kristen Bell, who gives voice to the anonymous Gossip Girl whose blog chronicles the goings-on of our teen set. Will she ever show up on screen? “We want to never say never," Schwartz said. "But certainly not for awhile.”

Do you think the show sounds too debauched for its target audience, what with storylines about drinking and attempted date rape in the opening episode? Or do you think critics are making a big deal out of nothing?

"And two, what happened to Vanessa? She's one of the main characters and nobody's mentioned her."

I was wondering about her too. Her character wasn't originally on the cast list for the show and I started to like flip out. I mean, how can you cut Vanessa out of the show, she's a major character! BUT, yesterday, I discovered they FINALLY casted a Vanessa, Jessica Szhor. I'm not to familiar with her but I looked up her picture and, GOD, she's beautiful.

"The person playin Jenny is nowhere near how the book described her!"

Oh my GOD, I know! Where are the humongous boobs? WHERE IS HER CURLY BROWN HAIR? D:

PLUS, why does Serena have a YOUNGER brother? She's supposed to have a older brother, as Blair develops a liking to him quite later on. Ugh, the show ruined quite a few plot points.

thats ridiculous i love gossip girl books so what if it has sex in it i saw kids in 7th grade readin zane books where they actually describe sex.Gossip Girl is atleast clean enough to not explain the whole thing. Critics who think the show goes to far need to be quiet!!!!!

I'm sort of excited for the show but I'm pissed about two things. One, the person playin Jenny is nowhere near how the book described her! Hell I look more like Jenny than the girl they cast. And two, what happened to Vanessa? She's one of the main characters and nobody's mentioned her.

Oh and of course we won't actually Kristen Bell's face on the show for awhile, if you've read the book you'd know we have no clue who the gossip girl really is. But I don't mean to be a sour sport, like I said I'm sort of excited

you all might think that Gossip Girl goes way too far, but you're wrong. Gossip Girl just tells the truth about how teenage lives are now. I am right, because my life now is way different then how my moms was when she was my age. My mom was shy and stuff to talk to boys, and never drank, or smoked. Now, drinking and smoking and sex are nothing new to teenagers, as I said before, Gossip Girl just tells the truth of how most teenage guys and girls' lives are today.

i am really excited for the show to start, though i'm not sure my parents will love it. i've read all the books and i LOVE the series. can't wait :]

I read most of the books and they are really good. I'm pretty sure the show will be that way too. If you don't want your teens to watch it then don't let them. It's as simple as that! We aren't 2 and we have minds of our own! We can protect ourselves.

Okay seriously... whoever these critics are that are saying it's going to be too "sexy" for teens needs to take a look at the teens in our world today. Sex and alcohol are definately not new for them and I'm sure they're mature enough to handle it. Sadly, the age for sex and alcohol to start is getting younger and younger now... so I wouldn't be surprised if 12 year girls watch this show and already have extensive knowledge about what is going on.

I read the whole series and I absolutely loved it! I think a girl of almost any age from 13 to 21 can enjoy it and its about what girls love to do most: gossip.
I think the show will be a huge hit and I can't wait for the season to start!

i ThiNK THE SHOW iS GONNA BE HOT !!! iM ACUAllY REAdiNG THE 2ND BOOK OF THE SERiES RiGHT NOW...
THE BOOKS ARE NOT PORTRAYiNG THE LiVES OF THE CHARACTERS ARE PERFECt, iT MAKES TEENS REAliZE THAT tHAT SHiT AND STEROTypiNG iS NOT A WAY OF LiFE...i AGREE WiTH THE ARTiClE TEENS THESE DAyS ARE SMARTER THAN THE PRESiDENt AND ONE T.V SERiES iSNT GONNA MAKE US DO SOMETHiNG OUTRAGEOUS...SO THE CRiTiCS NEED TO CAlM DEY NiPPLES. I CANT WAiT 4 THE SHOW TO COME OUt!! THANX C.W :D

I've been reading the Gossip Girls series from start to finish and they're a lotta fun to read! I think the show's gonna be a lot of fun to watch too.

Mackenzie: I used to think the way you do. When you reach 30, I would like to know if your opinion changes when you look back on the choices you made when you were younger and analyze the person you were as a teen. When I was 14, I didn't drink or do drugs. The drinking started at 15, the drugs at 18. Drugs ended at 20. I rarely drink anymore and if I do, it's a glass of wine.

Teens think they know what's good for them. Many teens get into arguments with their parents because they believe the guidelines their parents have set are too strict. Meaning curfews, only spending the night at a friends where there is parental supervision, no drinking/drugs, etc. Parents set these guidelines for a reason. Some teens understand it some don't.

While I was in High School, yes I had common sense, but looking back there were times that I lied to my parents so I could stay out all night. Why? When you're having fun sometimes you don't want it to stop. Was it wise for me to do this? No. My friends and I are lucky noone was killed, because whoever was driving was also drinking. Today, I don't drink and drive nor will I get into a car where the driver has been drinking. Sometimes it catches up with you later in life.
Some teens have this feeling of invincibility or the "it won't happen to me" vibe which can gravitate into adulthood. Guess what? Many people I hung out with as a teen and some cousins now have DUI's &/or gotten into accidents while drinking. They kept up their actions into their 20's and it has bit them in the arse.

As for sex...teens are going to have it. Don't do it because "everyone" is doing it. Don't do it because you're boyfriend/girlfriend wants to. Do it when you feel you're emotionally ready and always use protection. I had opportunities as early as 14 to have sex, but waited through 3 boyfriends to do so. I was halfway through my senior year when I did. Looking back, I'm glad I waited as I have no regrets.

Recounting a stupid decision I made in college frightens me. A few friends and I went to a frat party. Everyone got drunk. I don't know why I agreed to but a guy I was dancing with asked me to go have a shot with him "upstairs". I went and didn't tell me friends I was going. We had a shot then started talking which lead to kissing. I wasn't into it and told the guy I wanted to go back. He kept kissing, so I shoved him away and told him I was leaving. He let me leave...some girls are attacked. From that night on, my friends and I made a rule that none of us were to go off with a guy alone while at a party.

Even people who typically have good judgement skills and common sense can make a bad decision here and there. After all, noone is perfect.

One thing people do at all ages: learn from your experiences whether good or bad.

TV programs don't force a decision on someone. Peers don't force a decision on you. Remember: what you do in your life is up to you. If someone blames the TV for their actions, that's a poor excuse of a person who doens't want to take responsibility for his/her own actions. No I don't think this program is going too far.

this show is gonna suck!!!!!!

We kind of think teens are smarter than a lot of critics give them credit for.

I just turned 20 in July and as a person that is no longer technically a teen but still close enough to understand them, I have to say that you are only partially correct. When thinking along those lines, you have to be extremely careful. There are in fact teens out there who are smarter than you would expect when it comes to life and the world. Some of them are also younger than you would expect. However, there is also a huge percentage that is not. I'm not saying that they will do everything they see on television. Some of them do stupid things because they came up with it all on their own (and are extremely proud of that). All I'm saying is that you should be a little more realistic when saying something like that.

P.S. (this is for everyone) You remember that saying "Don't judge book by its cover."? This is extremely good advice when it comes to teenagers. Some of them will definitely fit the stereotypes. But most won't.

i have read a lot of the books and I'm a teen and reading these books did not want to make me have sex or go have a drink

and i cant wait for the show to come out

Your right, teens are A LOT smarter than critics give them credit for! I am 14 going on 15, and I am right, smack in the middle of all this sterotype. Just because we are young and like to have fun, doesn't mean we are going to wake up get high, get a drinking disease and have unsafe-sex. We do have brains, and we do have common sense. We are the future, and critics have to start having faith in us. I am so sick of critics saying that shows are bad influences because, you know what, it isn't movies and shows that we get our atcions from, it is our peers. And frankly, I think the small amount of teens who do stupid things without thinking, aren't at fault. The critics who blame TV and books are. Life is like being told not to open a closet door, you're gonna do it because of curiosity. Critics who say that shows with sex and drugs shouldn't be shown because teens shouldn't do it are doing nothing but bringing curiosity onto the teens. So all this critic non-sense, HAS to stop.

I'VE READ MOST OF THE BOOKS & I CAN'T WAIT 4 THE SHOW TO PREMEIRE!

Hey, Anon -- Yeah. we know Dynasty is in the deep, dark past to a lot of the audience for CW shows, but I like to think it's a vital part of our cultural heritage that should be taught in schools. Perhaps that's just me.

And Al Anon, I know where you're coming from, but I get so tired of hearing something along the lines of "Oh no, you're showing a character drink/do drugs/jump off a building/summon demons/attempt to spawn nuclear annihilation! Obviously, every single person between the ages of 13 and 18 will attempt to do the exact same thing, since all teenagers are mindless sheep!" It just gets old. If teens were really that stupid, we would have a lot more trouble perpetuating the species than we do.

Your mileage may vary.

I am so excited for the Gossip Girl show.
I love the books. Now I will love the show. (:

We kind of think teens are smarter than a lot of critics give them credit for.

I kinda think they're not.

I think it's a lot of fuss over nothing. People can pretend teens are in the dark on those subjects, it doesn't make it true.

And thinking you're more intelligent than you actually happen to be is not a quality exclusive to those between 13 and 19.

People should give kids more credit, most can handle the whole monkey see monkey ignore. If the writers earn the story lines without being completely cliche and unoriginal then why not?

Comparing Alexis and Crystal (two adult women) to teen girls? ok

BTW: the majority of people who would be tuning into GG probably weren't even born while Dynasty aired.

From experience, teens like to think they're smarter than they are. Upon becoming an adult, you realize differently.
