Supernatural: I Put a Spell On You
Welcome back, Winchesters! We've missed you!
Our boys are back investigating a nasty case of witchcraft-induced death -- the poor victim died choking on her own blood and spitting out teeth -- and they find the likely culprits pretty quickly. Huh, so this will be an easy job for the Winchesters, right?
Not so much. Ruby appears, and she's got some bad news. These witches may not be a problem, but the master they serve is a demon that is way beyond the boys' pay grade. They've got to get out of town before the demon eats them for lunch. Sam is willing to listen, but Dean would rather kill her. This does not go over well with either Ruby or Sam, and Sam knocks the gun out of the way when Dean tries to shoot her.
Dean is not at all happy about this development, or about other things he's been seeing in Sam. Sam gets pissed right back -- in case you forgot, you'll be "leaving," Dean, and I'll be handling all this on my own. I've got to become tougher -- more like you.
Before we can follow this line of inquiry, Dean gets distracted with the stabbing pain and the blood he's coughing up. Sam searches for the hex bag, but when he can't find it, he heads off to the witches. But they're not doing this to Dean -- the demon is. And the demon is right there, disguised as one of the coven members.
The demon pins Sam against a wall and pontificates -- both activities that demons seem to enjoy. Before she can kill him, Dean bursts in -- Ruby had saved him from the demonic death by squirting some noxious substance into his mouth. But Dean doesn't have any more luck jumping the demon. Uh-oh.
Then Ruby comes in. I just want to talk! She tells the demon. I've missed you, and I just want to serve you again! Dean goes from pissed off -- he angrily mouths "I told you!" at Sam -- to intrigued, when it looks like Ruby and the Demon are about to make out. Apparently hot girl-on-girl action is enough to distract him from impending doom. But it was just a ploy for Ruby to get in striking range of the demon with her demon-killing knife. Problem is, the demon doesn't fall for it. Butts are kicked, and it looks like Ruby is doomed, but the last surviving member of the coven distracts the demon by magicking some pins into her mouth. That's enough for Dean to get free and stab her a gazillion times with the demon-killing knife. Saved!
Back at the hotel, Ruby confirms what the demon told them -- she was a human, a witch, who sold her soul to that demon hundreds of years ago. When she died, she went to Hell -- and became a demon herself. That's what will happen when Dean dies, too. He won't just be tormented by demons -- he'll become the thing he hates and hunts. And, Ruby says, there's nothing that can keep you out of the pit. The best you can do is help me prepare Sam to take on the demon war that's brewing. Dean looks like he's considering it.
What did you think? Is Ruby lying -- and if so, about what? What was your favorite part of the episode? Vote in our polls, and tell all in the comments!

I'm very glad someone pointed out the annoying Pussycat Doll advertisement during the show. It goes right along with the rather large Next Top Model one, that also flashed in and out a few times taking up almost the entire bottom half of my screen.
I understand they have to advertise, but that didn't impress me. It's distracting.
As far as Katie's acting goes. I'd love for her to have a little more power behind her voice, in certain moments. I thought she played the end scene with Dean rather well though.

Nice to have the show back. I am disappointed at CW for displaying a Pussycat Doll logo/ad throughout the whole show. On my HD broadcast it practically fills the lower right quarter of the screen. This was very distracting and CW should be embarrassed for ruining a great show.

Justme - You though Jared was lackluster? What I got from this episode: Sam's hope to save Dean is fading. Did you notice the state of panic that rushed over Sam when Dean began spitting up blood & the force in which he tore into the mattress looking for the hex bag? Dean's days are slipping away and Sam fears what will happen to him when he'll no longer have the support & protection of his big bro. Not to mention Sam will have to go on knowing his brother is in hell - alone.
Personally, I thought jared brought these emotions out beautifully.
Ruby: i agree is schoolgirlish. i think it's because of katie's voice. Realistically, there's nothing wrong with it, but for a demon..?

I am beyond thrilled that spn is back. Life is good again.
I agree that cassidy's acting has improved a lot. She was bearable in this ep. but I am not buying Ruby's shickt for a minute. I am still hung up on that "little fallen angel on your shoulder" bit. If what Ruby says is true what about the entire lucifer fallen angel mythology????? She's changin her story. And COME ON there *HAS* to be a way to save Dean. (((PLease Kripke Please!)))

The episode was fine overall. Some interesting developments on Dean's deal. Jensen was his usual magnificent self. Jared, I thought was a bit lackluster, but may be he's just playing Sam as more subdued and depressed which makes sense for the character.
But I have to agree with Jaz. Katie isn't cutting it for me which is a shame because I do think Ruby has some potential as a character. I just find her so pedestrian and uninteresting to watch. She still makes Ruby seem like a complete lightweight, a school girl instead of some powerful, possibly conflicted demon.
Honestly I wish I could like her better but I don't and unfortunately it's affecting my enjoyment of the character. My one hope, and I know this won't happen this season at least, is that they exorcise Ruby and bring her back with a different perhaps more experienced actress who could do this character justice.

Personally I've always liked the Ruby character and KC's acting was somewhat better in this ep. Still think that Ruby has her own agenda though; not just to help Sam become a more ruthless hunter to survive when Dean goes to Hell (or will he)? Maybe this West Coast demon leader was the Crossroad's Demon's boss therefore the new holder of Dean's contract; kill him and negate the contract - huh, please, please, please!!!!
Mega gross-factor in this episode, which was great, but what made me really go eeeewww was Dean saying "Was that ass? Because it tasted like ass!" - GROSS - I don't know if this was an infamous Jensen ad lib or Ben's writing but give me maggots any day!
Next week's episode looks to be an even better one that this - can't wait - and remember to tell EVERYONE you know to watch!
Ciao from blizzard stricken Toronto.

Overall, I enjoyed this episode. Jared and Jensen were fabulous as always.
Heartwrenching moments: Sam saying he needs to like his big bro in order to fight the war without Dean. Dean learning (again) he may become something he hunts. At least he'll begin fighting for his life.
Ben Edlund's script was well written, leaving us wondering what Ruby's truths and lies are in addition to her overall agenda. The conversation at the end between Ruby and Dean left me clueless as to where the arc is going. does Ruby remember what humanity is and what is means to feel emotion? or was she just trying to get dean to trust her so she can get sam to the "level" she wants him at? Does she want Sam to lose his humanity? Is she one of the Demons fighting for power and using Sam to do it? Can she save Dean? As intruiged as I've become with Ruby, Katie doesn't pull her off on screen - when she's trying to be a badass demon. Although, in the finale scene, Katie did fine while showing Ruby's supposed humanity. I'm trying hard to not let katie's inexperience affect the good aspects of Ruby's part in the arc this season.
One point I'd like to make: the use of Ruby vs the use of Bela. We've now had an episode where each had a high profile and something more was revealed. Bela's reveal and presence had absolutely nothing to do with the winchesters or the the arc. Ruby's reveal was to advance Dean's character development and her presence is a direct link to the war and Sam's arc. Hmmm... it's obvious Kripke knew what he was doing when Ruby was created.
only 3 more episodes. I've heard a rumor that they've flipped ep 11 & 12 because 11 makes for a better season finale just in case...
I wish this strike would end. ::sigh::

I loved this ep, it was totally gross in a couple of spots & made me gag & I had to watch through my fingers a couple of times, but it was excellent & Ruby is even more intriguing now, I think. Both Jensen & Jared gave stellar performances, but that is the norm from them. A lot of info from this ep too, there HAS to be a way to SAVE DEAN!!!!

I mostly loved the episode. As usual, Jensen and Jared give stellar performances. I actually like Ruby -- she's OK for a demon.
The only problem I had was with the big reveal -- I'm just not buying it.

YaY...Sam's tummy! Just had to say it.
I really liked Ruby in this episode. *gasps*
I missed my boys!

First up, so glad SN is back on.
Overally I liked this one. The only part I could have done without, would have been the maggots.
Loved Dean's comment on the poor bunny.
As far as Ruby goes, I didn't dislike her in this episode. I thought Katie's acting had improved a bit as well. I'm honestly hoping Ruby was lying in general, and in the end she'll turn out to have her own evil hidden agenda.
But we'll see where it goes.

Ok, so the episode was awesome, because I've waited for it soo long, but miss Cassidy?
Duh, there are many, many other actresses that could pull it of better...
Ruby is great, Katie is not.
But I guess it's no problem - demons can always change their meatsuit ^^'
